Object Management Group Issues Request for Proposals for EDI Standard for Non-Medical Workplace Benefits
Simplify electronic data interchange formats for member enrollment-related data

Needham, MA – August 7, 2018 – The Object Management Group® (OMG®), an international, open membership, not-for-profit technology standards consortium, issued an EDI Standard for Non-Medical Workplace Benefits RFP to establish a standard that transmits electronic data for non-medical, non-retirement workplace benefits between benefit administration/HRIS organizations and insurance carriers.

“Unlike health insurance offerings, workplace benefits carriers don’t have a standard enrollment specification like HIPAA 834, so each carrier is left to create its own proprietary format and creating and maintaining the data feeds is expensive,” said Aaron Roby, vice president, partner enrollment and implementation strategies officer at Texas Life Insurance Company and OMG member. “This RFP is the first step in an effort that will result in a data exchange standard to streamline this process and reduce the complexity and associated costs of processing enrollment information for all participants.”

Both members and non-members of OMG may show their interest in participating in the process by submitting a Letter of Intent by September 14, 2018. In order to be a submitter, individually or as part of a submission team, companies must become members of the OMG by the initial submission deadline of November 12, 2018.

In May, the OMG chartered a new membership class and a task force called the Workplace Benefits Domain Task Force to establish technical standards, specifications and best practices to communicate  data between providers and consumers of workplace benefits products and services. Companies interested in joining this task force, such as carriers of group and worksite benefits, third-party benefits administrators, benefits administration technology companies, and insurance brokerage firms, may do so at https://www.omg.org/registration/WPB.htm.
