Object Management Group Chairs Report on Technology Processes Underway at New Orleans Members Meeting

Needham, MA – November 9, 2017 – The Chairs of Object Management Group® (OMG®) Task Forces (TFs) and Special Interest Groups (SIGs) delivered updates about their standards work during a plenary session on the last day of the OMG quarterly membership meeting, which took place from September 25-29 in New Orleans, Louisiana. OMG is an international, open membership, not-for-profit technology standards consortium where members develop and maintain standards that influence the future direction of technology as well as impact industries including space, government, finance, manufacturing, robotics and healthcare. The following Chairs reported on their groups' accomplishments:

  • John Glaubitz, co-chair of the Retail Domain Task Force (RDTF) and Principal Architect at Vertex Inc.: “The Retail DTF in its initial meeting, submitted the UnifiedPOS V2 Model And POS Printer API RFP which was approved, and established new work groups for a Retail Ontology and RFC submissions for UPOS v1.14.1 and Video Analytics.”
  • Dr. Bill Curtis, Executive Director of the Consortium for Information & Software Quality ™: “The Automated Technical Debt Measure (ATDM) Task Force had the finalized specification of ATDM submitted by the Consortium for Information & Software Quality and approved for publication as an OMG standard, in addition to holding workshops on both Cybersecurity and System Modernization.”
  • Sanford Friedenthal, chair of the Systems Engineering Domain Special Interest Group and Consultant at SAF Consulting: “The SysML® v2 RFP Working Group presented the draft RFPs that contain the requirements for SysML v2, with the goal of voting to issue the SysML v2 RFP at the next OMG meeting in December. These equirements were updated since the previous OMG meeting in June based on feedback from an industry review.”
  • Kenichi Nakamura, co-chair of Robotics-DTF, chair of the Hardware Abstraction Layer for Robotic Technology™ 1.0 Finalization Task Force (HAL4RT™) and Director of Japan Embedded Systems Technology Association (JASA): "We issued Robotic Service Ontology (RoSO) RFI and discussed HAL4RT 2.0 RFC."
  • Ken Rubin, co-chair of the Healthcare Domain Task Force and Director, Standards and Interoperability, VHA Office of Knowledge Based Systems: “The OMG Healthcare Domain Task Force continues to make significant inroads with the BPM community to establish a style guide and patterns-based approach for modeling healthcare workflows in BPMN™/CMMN™/DMN™ that are sharable and portable across institutions.  The “Field Guide” is under revision with an anticipated release later this calendar year.”
  • Charlotte Wales, co-chair of the Middleware and Related Services (MARS) PTF and Lead Software Engineer at The MITRE Corporation: “MARS issued a Request for Information concerning Secure Network Communications intended to gauge interest in developing specifications to integrate communication software frameworks and technologies with automatic embedded software generation, security/prototyping environments and standard HPEC toolboxes/libraries.”
  • Jeff Smith, co-chair of the Analysis and Design Platform Task Force (ADTF) and Chief Systems Engineer at the Multi Agency Collaboration Environment: “At the September ADTF meeting, Geoffrey Biggs discussed Safety and Reliability for the UML® RFP initial submission and Manfred Koethe presented a summary of the Combined Event Metamodel and Profile RFP and Agent Metamodel and Profile RFP initial submissions. Davide Sottara and Jerry Goodnough gave an initial submission presentation of API4KB RFP and Cory Casanave and Jim Logan gave a SIMF RFP revised submission updated mapping/semantic grounding section review. Sanford Friedenthal and Ed Seidewitz gave SysML v2 and SysML v2 API and Services RFP presentations and Precise Semantics of Time RFP proposal culminating in four motions viz. for the Information Management Metamodel and Multiple Vocabulary Facility RFPs to change the revised submission dates to November 6, 2017 and for the SIMF and API4KB submissions to change the revised submission dates to May 21, 2018.”
  • Elisa Kendall, OMG Architecture Board member and co-chair of the Ontology Definition Metamodel RTF: “The Ontology PSIG continued its efforts of providing guidance for OMG domain ontology specification development in New Orleans, meeting with both the Retail Domain Task Force and the C4I Domain Task Force on this topic. The Languages, Countries and Codes 1.0 Standard was also finalized at the New Orleans meeting, providing a current, publicly referenceable knowledge graph for ISO 639 parts 1 and 2 (Language codes) and ISO 3166 parts 1 and 2 (Countries and Country Subdivisions).” 
  • Gerardo Pardo-Castellote, co-chair of the Data-Distribution Service™ Platform Special Interest Group (SIG) and CTO of Real-Time Innovations: “The Data-Distribution SIG conducted a DDS-Security™ Interoperability demo among three products: InterCOM DDS from Kongsberg, CoreDX from Twin Oaks Computing, and Connext DDS from Real-Time Innovations (RTI).”
  • Sumeet Malhotra, chair of the Methods and Tools PSIG and Engagement Partner at Tata Consultancy Services: “The Methods and Tools PSIG met and discussed Essence-based training material for various U.S. universities. Results of evaluations of specific software tools available in the market for specific types of Essence-based consulting competencies were also presented and discussed. The Essence™ Revision Task Force version 1.2 team met to discuss new issues to be specified and voted on. The Essence 1.2 RTF deadline was extended by another meeting cycle.”
  • Ron Townsen, co-chair of the Command, Control, Computing, Communications and Intelligence (C4I) Domain Task Force and Chief Engineer, General Dynamics Mission Systems: “The C4I Domain Task Force released the DDS Status Monitoring RFP. Members also worked on the Data/Tagging and Labeling RFP and the Navigation Interface RFP.”
  • Bobbin Teegarden, co-chair of the Agents Platform Special Interest Group (SIG) and Technology Evangelist at No Magic: “The Agent PSIG met in New Orleans, with good progress on the combined Agent and Event AgEnt combined submission (responding to both the Agent RFP and the Event RFP in one response), and Manfred Koethe presented an initial look at the metamodel to the ADTF.”
  • Cory Casanave, co-chair of the Government Domain Task Force and President of Model Driven Solutions: “The Government domain task force initiated a new OMG initiative “Empowering Government” to provide information to governments on standards, technologies and best practices. The initiative is scheduled to go live in January.”
  • Claude Baudoin, co-chair of the Business Modeling and Integration (BMI) Domain Task Force and Owner and Principal Consultant at cébé IT and Knowledge Management: “The BMI Domain Task Force discussed starting work on a framework for risk management, which is likely to be done jointly with several other Task Forces as it affects every domain.”
  • Bob Martin, chair of the SACM 2.0 Finalization Task Force and Senior Principal Engineer at MITRE: “The Structured Assurance Case Metamodel 2.0 (SACM 2.0) 2nd FTF Report was approved.”
  • Yves Bernard, co-chair of the SysML 1.5 Revision Task Force (RTF) and MBSE Leader at Airbus Avionics & Simulation Products: “ OpenMBEE will provide the new core on top of which our SysML 1.5 RTF tooling solutions will be built.”
