OMG Awarded Grant To Participate In Smart City Projects
Former NIST Presidental Innovation Fellow joins OMG to lead efforts

Needham, MA - 11-06-14 - The Object Management Group® (OMG®) was awarded a grant by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to aid in the diffusion of Smart City principles and practices from the research lab to real-world application. The grant will allow OMG to participate in Smart City development projects including the NIST Global City Teams Challenge which will help communities worldwide collaboratively address issues ranging from air quality to traffic management to emergency services coordination.

Geoff Mulligan, a former Presidential Innovation Fellow of NIST, has joined the OMG to lead the Smart Cities efforts. Geoff has been instrumental in Internet development, including helping to design IPv6, the latest version of the communications protocol that routes traffic across the Internet. He holds over 15 patents in computer security, networking and electronic mail, and was called to testify before Congress on electronic commerce and computer security. He has spent his career focused on the Internet of Things, RF Sensors, IP networks and open systems. He is notable for developing the Embedded Internet and creating the 6LoWPAN protocol, was a founder of the Zigbee Alliance and founded and has been the Chairman of the IP for Smart Objects Alliance since its launch in 2008.

"I'm looking forward to working with the OMG in leading their Smart and Sustainable Cities efforts," said Mr. Mulligan. "As more and more cities begin adopting Smart City practices, we're going to see greener, more efficient and cost-effective communities worldwide. As the benefits of Smart Cities and their sustainability become more widely known, we can expect to see the same practices implemented in other settings: from industry to the home."

The rise of Smart Cities will be beneficial for urban dwellers, resulting in cost-efficient, sustainable, resilient, and safer communities. The public will benefit from future Smart Cities when objects, including buildings and vehicles, are connected with humans and devices through human-computer interfaces. The necessary connectivity for a networked society, as a whole, is dependent on standards and implementing policies which are trusted, secure and ensure privacy as needed.

OMG has already been involved with Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) activities - such as Smart Cities - as it manages the Industrial Internet Consortium, an open membership organization formed to accelerate the development, adoption, and wide-spread use of interconnected machines and devices, intelligent analytics, and people at work.
